How to spot a payment scam before it costs you

Most payment scams follow the same script: someone creates a sense of urgency, asks you to move money quickly, and makes it feel awkward to question them. Knowing the script is half the defence.

Warning signs

Be wary of unexpected calls, texts or emails asking you to confirm details or move money to a 'safe account'. A real bank will never ask for your full PIN or password, and will never ask you to transfer funds to protect them.

What to do instead

Hang up and call the number on your card or on our website. Take your time: a genuine request will still be there in ten minutes. Never share one-time codes, even with someone who says they work for the bank.

If it feels urgent, that is the moment to slow down.

If you think you have already sent money to the wrong person, contact us straight away. The sooner we know, the more we can do.
